The Cult of Lincoln

Lexi lent me a friend's "Phantom of the Opera" CD so that I could burn copies for us both. We've been duetting while waiting during rehearsals the past few days, and now we actually have the music. Today, in our Group Voice lesson, we all clustered around Jimmy, where I had called up the lyrics from a website, and Lexi, Katy Crow, and I all sang "The Point of No Return". Too fun.

For this reason, I've decided to lift part of my mild stigma against Andrew Lloyd Webber. Sure, he has his share of drivel, but I really love a lot of the Phantom music (and it's inspiring, too), so I hereby give the composer a gold star and a thumbs-up and an apology for all the jokes I've cracked about him. So yay. Just remember, Andrew Lloyd, if you want to avoid mockery, don't give songs titles like "Magical Lasso". Dear gravy. ::snorks::

Reminds me of my last summer at Maine Teen, when Tara and I sang "Angel of Music", the brief Christine/Meg duet, for a talent show. It was hilarious -- afterwards, a girl approached us and said that we had lovely voices, and that we were good enough to use microphones. After she left, Tara and I burst out laughing in our joint loathing of mics, especially in a space where they were wholly unnecessary. T'was amusing.

And that's all I have to say about that. And now I feel like recording snippets from Pratchett's "Masquerade". Muaha. ::t00bs off to find the book::

Vendredi Cinq

1. As a child, who was your favorite superhero/heroine? Why?

As a teensy Priscellie, I adored Rainbow Brite. I suppose she counts as a superheroine. Of course, my sister always insisted on playing ALL the Color Kids, making me be Murky and Lurky. I was scarred for life.

2. What was one thing you always wanted as a child but never got?

A Sega Genesis. I always wanted a video game platform, but I never got to go beyond Game Boy and Game Gear.

3. What's the furthest from home you've been?

Italy. Rome, Venice, and Florence.

4. What's one thing you've always wanted to learn but haven't yet?

3D modeling and animation. Slowly learning, though.

5. What are your plans for the weekend?

Nothing. Someone call me!

I'm just trying to think of things to post so that perhaps Blogger would decide to publish some time this evening. Hmm....

1. Mimi and I listened to part of my FoC recording on the car ride to school. T'was quite amusing.
2. Last night, I dreamed that I asked Neil Gaiman to come to Winter Formal with me. In his response back (affirmative), he sent two giant, fantasy-esque snails, which were ridden by two talking frogs. My dogs tried to eat them. I bragged to the cast of RW&S, then realized I'd have to find a new date for Matt. Interesting dream.
3. I'm going to dinner now. If Blogger does not publish, I shall be most inconsolably vexed.

I take a certain sadistic glee in the knowledge that I left "Red White and Swing" rehearsal after finishing Scene 2... at 6:15. Poor kids, having to stay until God-knows-when. I'm so glad I'm only in the first couple of scenes each act! ::dances:: And to think Blaydes wanted to get through the entire show tonight. Ha!

Blaydes is delusional, and he projects these delusions onto his actors. Poor, poor actors. ::snickets merrily::

In other news, I add another classic number to "Hideous Costumes Through The Ages". This one is a shapeless brown dress with 30 "decorative" buttons and a built-in apron. Yay me. Heck, I'd rather go through another week of Conjur Woman makeup (approx time to apply: 1 1/2 hrs min) than this. I look forward to "Man of La Mancha" like a parched man in a scorching desert looks forward to a glass of ice water.

Awww, how cute! Today marks the one year anniversary of the completed "Whatever Happened to Honor"! I recorded it January 26th, 2002, and it premiered on the web the next day, because I was too nervous to post it. Seems I'd better get back to work and post some others!

Actually, last night, I managed to cut out an entire scene, which makes me quite happy, and I'm trying to figure out if I can smush two further scenes into the opening song. I already know I can consolidate one scene-let into the song and I'm trying to work out if I can work in the other. It would make a lot more sense, theatrically. So huzzah! The song/dialogue ratio keeps dropping, moving progressively closer to my tastes. And Terry Pratchett knows of its existence, which makes me utterly convulse with joy. It will be put on sometime in my four years at Penn, mark my words.

Renata mentioned the song "I will not be afraid of women", by Dar Williams, so I decided to listen to my a cappella version (Dartmouth Decibelles) this morning. After the song, I continued listening, and I was amused by the song "Kyrie". For one, the vocall percussion sounded a lot like a woman saying "doom!" over and over. Also, the phrase "burns a gemlike flame" was included in the lyrics, which is from the Walter Pater essay obsessed about in my last English class. Har.

For the Curious:

No pirate!Endless last night, because 1) I wasn't feeling very inspired, and 2) I can't draw cowled robes to save my life. Destiny will have to wait a few days. Tonight looks doubtful, as well, as the aforementioned English paper calls. And I want to have some of my own writing done soon so that I'll have something to show Moni when she gets home. ::schnoogles her partner-in-crime/beta::

And yes, I finally got "Men at Arms--the Musical" on my LJ interests list. Go me.

Inquiry to my muses:

Why am I always at my most inspired when working on English papers? This evening, I was listening to tape three of FoC to check to make sure the quality is good (bah, two slipups. And the other two tapes are perfect! Grrrr), when I was struck with inspiration. I zoomed to Microsoft Word to work it into my story, when I realized "hey, I'm supposed to be working on an English paper right now."

And my last comparable burst of inspiration occurred midway through my last English paper. And come to think of it, most of my breakthroughs in "Men at Arms" happened when I was attempting to work on my second research paper last year. Good gravy, my muses are fickle.

Our next photography assignment is to make three photographs that represent a piece of music. Der. As rich as photography can be, I don't think any photograph could decently convey the depth of music.

Oh well. I'm not one to argue with assignments. ::smiles grimly::

Current contenders, so far:
"Revolution 9", Beatles
"Bolero", Moulin Rouge version (most likely going to be dismissed, as it's too richly moving)
"Not the Red Baron", Tori Amos
The piano bit at the end of "Clubbed to Death", Rob D (from "The Matrix" CD)
"Carbon", Tori Amos
Something from the "Amelie" or "Nightmare Before Christmas" sountrack

Feel free to add suggestions, if anything strikes you. I'm still looking through my music for ideas. Tori Amos has potential. I'm also thinking of music where the orchestration is more important and prominent than the lyrics. Der.

Quote of the Day:

(playing "Boys for Pele" in the Photography lab)

Becky: Is this Christian rock?
Me: No, it's Tori Amos.

Photography was quite interesting. I've been wanting to try to print on mylar for quite some time, so over the past week, I sprayed the mylar so that it would accept the Liquid Light (a paint-on emulsion) and painted it. Today, I had time to print. I used a high-contrast transparency of a photo of a religious icon, and went through the motions. However, in the developer bath, I noticed that the mylar wasn't taking to the process as well as it had originally seemed. It marred quite easily -- anything innocently brushing against it would wipe emulsion away from the page. I decided not to give up, as if all else failed, I would still have some excellent PS grunge brush fodder. The first large image came out rather well, and due to my deliberately sloppy brushwork, the shoddiness looked intended. Go me.

For the second large image (I only painted two large pieces and two index-card pieces for test strips), I decided to combine the transparency with a negative of another religious statue. This one was a complete mess, due to the fickle nature of Liquid Light, but I might figure out something to do with it in Studio Art. Lovely grunge. ::grins:: Yayfun. I'll scan n' show when I first get the chance. Maybe tonight I'll scan the negatives.

I made the mistake of trying to work on my Chaos theory project as a break from my English paper. Bad idea. This book needs to die. It starts out simple, then it immediately becomes incomprehensible. I must be missing something (like a math doctorate, for one). The book is the equivalent of: "This is addition. Oh, and this is the alphabet. Got that? No questions? Okay, now on to a treatise on multivariable calculus written in an obscure Hungarian dialect using ENIGMA-encoded braille."

I hate you, oh evil book on Chaos theory.

::explodes in a mess of overjoyed Priscilla-bits::

PTerry responded to my questions! He's now aware of my existence! ::dies of sheer joy::

In case the message eventually gets deleted, here are my plebian utterances:
I have a few burning questions for you. Hopefully you'll escape without catching on fire. :D

The first should be relatively painless. How did you get the name "Angua"? I'm rather curious about name etymology, and the closest I've found is that it's the Papiamento word for "needle", and somehow that doesn't seem like a proper connection. Any insight for us? Or did you just make it up? (Also, how is her name pronounced? AN-gyoo-uh?)

The second is about the position of "The Last Hero". Publication-wise, it came between "Thief of Time" and "Night Watch", but because the two occur simultaneously, I wondered where tLH fell. I guessed that it came after "Night Watch", as in NW Ponder doesn't appear know Carrot very well, but confirmation would be appreciated.

The third (and last) question might be a bit trickier. A year ago, mostly as a joke, I started writing "Men at Arms: The Musical", and by this point, I've grown so attatched to it that I'd like to stage it eventually. Should I contact Stephen Briggs about it? Whose arena would this question fall under?

Thanks so much for taking the time this week to answer everyone's questions. I eagerly look forward to "Wee Free Men" and "Monstrous Regiment"! Also, I hope you decide to include some US locations in your next signing tour. We'd love to have you!

Priscilla Spencer
And here are his divine, heaven-blessed responses:
Priscilla,
Angua is simply Ang as in bang, gue as in you, a as in ah:-)

I wanted Night Watch to be a bit 'free-floting' -- that is, modern DW but not nailed down. I think you've nailed it!

Stephen has rights in his adaptations of the books, and for practical purposes he administers all the amdram stuff on behalf of the Orangutan Foundation, which gets most of the money. But if you're starting grom the book, then you'll need to talk to me via my agent, at least to be begin with.

Break a leg

Terry
I haven't been this fangirlishly overjoyed since Neil Gaiman said "Lincoln is better than Wilson" and I got to give him a hug. ::beams:: Good god, I love my life. And I am such a fangirl. XD

Today, the girls in my PE class took turns being sexually assaulted by the offspring of Darth Vader and the Pillsbury Doughboy.

I could just leave the entry at that, but I feel like explaining further.

This quarter, I've been taking a self-defense course in PE. It doesn't teach you pretty kicks and choreographed moves. We learn techniques that could actually be used in an assault situation. Today was the final day in the course, so Meg, the teacher, brought in two guys to try to attack us, and we used any means necessary to fend them off. In the first two attacks, they didn't have any protective padding so that they could grab us more easily, and we practiced control. After that, they put on protective padding and face masks and such, and we experienced a continuous series of atttacks for 45 seconds to a minute. Exhausting. But I felt very pleased with myself when I kicked a guy in the face after he had borne me to the ground. Huzzah.

And to think I took almost three years of Tae Kwon Do without learning anything that could be used to save my life in such a situation. Shame.

Winter Formal. It wasn't as fun as Homecoming, but I still enjoyed myself. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the key from Carolyn, so I wasn't able to take everyone across the street to my photography show, which was disappointing, but oh well. My friends have realized how important this was to me, so they've resolved to find a time where we can all check it out. Yay.

We all met at Hockaday, but Matt and I had to leave for the restaurant earlier, as he was forbidden by his parents from driving on any highways. I figured out how to get us to the restaurant without use of maps, using my Mad Directional Skillz, and we ended up arriving at almost the same time as the others, despite the others leaving about 10 minutes after us. Hurrah for averaging 35 mph!

Anyway, the food was good, and was brought by intelligible waiters that used slightly worrying phrases such as "If any of you gentlemen are craving a meaty dish." I have no idea how they managed to run up the bill so high on us, as we each ended up having to pay $54, when our entrees each cost about $15. I know the gratuity would be sky-high, and the appetizers and deserts probably contributed, but it seems rather exhorbitant to me. Matt tried to pay for me, but he didn't bring a credit card, so I assured him that he got Chivalry Points anyway.

Then we were off to the Info Mart, which does not sound like the venue for a school dance, and more like a computer store. We milled about, fraternizing with various people, and generally reiterating the exact same conversation 20+ times.

All the linguistic finesse one requires to survive a Winter Formal:
"Hi, I'm _____."
"This is _____."
"You look so pretty!"

Grk. But we ran into Ira, the Moldovan girl in my AP Physics C and PE classes, and Matt and I talked to her about Zdob zi Zdub, the Moldovan band Matt's Moldovan friend Xandu introduced us to. I told her I'd bring my CD to Physics class so that we could groove. T'was amusing.

Matt wasn't feeling up to par, as he's been sick most of last week, so we decided to skip the movie (TTT) and leave. I look forward to the next dance, where Matt and I will hopefully go in duct tape attire. Good stuff.

Snow update: Big flakes, now! And it's sticking to the grass, sort of!

::dances about, being evil::

Winter Formal is tonight, and the restaurant we're going to is right across the street from the gallery building. I'm giong to ask them to open it up for us so all can see my show after dinner. Gravy, it's good to be evil.

Tonight was the opening for my photography show. I'm one of ten that exhibited. 12 prints. While I was bowled over by all the wonderful feedback I got, I was incredibly disappointed that so few of my friends came. Mrs. Yoshii--my current photography teacher--came, and my friend Erin Finley (another girl going to Penn) stopped by, but that was pretty much it. I've been squealing about this show in Advisory and most of my classes for the past week, but almost no one stopped by. Not Stephanie or Sagari, my photographer friends. Not Marcelina or Chungy, who were actually pictured in the show. No one from any of my classes but Erin.

I thought I had made it clear to them that it's really difficult to gain access to the building, so the only real chance they'd get would be tonight. Apparently they had better things to do. ::alternates between seething and sulking::

I'm now exhausted, because I just spent the last three hours on my feet. Joy. But upon getting home, I read large portions of The Truth to my parents, which cheered me up immensely. I adore doing voices and sound effects for the recording imp. ::grins evilly::

Dialogue of the Day:

Me: Here -- this is amusing. It's Moldovan music.
*Mamaliga Mania*
Me: It's a song about the Moldovan national dish.
Abilee: Can we listen to angry chick music now?

And that was my day.

Because I never keep my word regarding which book I'm going to read next, during English class today, I created an Untouchable and Unquestionable Reading List of Doom. And all that attempt to persuade me to change my mind will be hit with large sticks.

  1. One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  2. I'm A Stranger Here Myself, Bill Bryson
  3. Fellowship of the Ring, Tolkien
  4. Tricky Business, Dave Barry
  5. The Two Towers, Tolkien
  6. Prey, Michael Crichton
I leave the rest open to future dispute. Now just watch me stick to this without falter. Just watch me. ::poses dramatically::

The final version of my self-portrait can be seen (and hopefully, commented upon) here. I'm proud out of my mind, especially because this was my first attempt with pastels (making sunsets in 3rd grade doesn't count). Squee.

The left speaker of my stereo is out. No idea why. Quite amusing, as it only plays half the range of my music. I'm listening to "Hey, Bulldog" (Beatles are excellent for working on art projects, say I), and nearly all the lyrics are gone. Instant karaoke!

Renata sorted through her mailbox. I think I'll do the same. Oh look! Nearly 800 emails saved from RML! ::filters through:: Here's half:

My best specimen of writing ever:

Renata felt her stomach turn sickeningly, like a sentient undercooked pancake stuck inside a leaky plastic ball in the middle of a hurricane. She felt the overwhelming burden of control fall heavily onto her shoulders, like an elephant dropped from a tall building onto a homing pigeon. She felt her throat constrict, but that wasn't actually nervousness, it was phlegm. -- From the RML fic (anyone mind if I post a link to the full text? or would bad things happen?)

More haiku:

Elmo:
I mean like, popcorn
It reminds me of movies
Um... do you get it?

Tiffany:
She was not, you know.
Stuttering is not her most
Preferred way of speech.

Elmo:
I'm so dyslexic
each time I try to type "dog"
I type "god" instead

Other Quotes:

Elmo: HI! I'm Elmo! I'm gay and cute!
Keith: Elmo, you aren't a character in a bad NBC sitcom, you can have a hobby other then being gay.

Kait: I had never really thought about the corrolation between the size of Roger's attention span and the shinyness of Mimi's pants, but suddenly it's all starting to make sense.... Note to self: Get Mark some shiny clothes for next m/r fic...
Renata: *mind boggles* My GOD! You're right!
Megan: "mark sauntered into the room, in his new silver holographic vinyl jumpsuit, with, of course, his trusty scarf wrapped around his neck"

Taze (a briefly-lived newbie): I've never seen Rent, per se, but I've sang parts of it. For Mort. You really, really don't want to know. (Dressing up as Death and singing "Without You" was the one of the sanest experiences of my life. Oddly calming.).

Elmo: Once again, the "purple, because ice cream has no bones" theory comes into play.

Elmo: "Guuuuys and dolls! We're just a bunch of crazy guuuuys and dolls!" "That's not even a real song!"

Liz: ::Puts on nosy Spanish-teacher hat:: Vat ees theees? Vat ees thees "Deescwurrld?"

Renata: *hisses at Keith* Dont' SCARE us like that! And DON'T quit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look how many exclamation points had to die for that! LOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!!

Renata: *pats Chelle's head* Take Alex to Atlantis! It's good, confusing, Disney fun! And there's a character from a Turkish prison!
Chelle: I actually wanted to see that movie but Alex doesnt want to see it.
Priscilla: Tie him up in his sleep, throw him in the car, and drag him to a movie theatre. Threaten to take away all his toys and TV and computer privelidges. Ask him again if he wants to see Atlantis. (I'll make a really good mother)
Keith: Or a good mob boss.

Kait: I could see Elmo doing that, tactlessly of course. "Can I take your picture?" "Um...what?" "Please. For a friend?" 'Okay." "No, you have to take your shirt off first!" "....are you gonna buy something or...?"

Ayano: And my god, I just used one of those XP smiley faces. I HATE those things. They remind me of Charles Manson, digitized.

Renata: Oooh, I just love gossip about people I've never met! Wow! We as a list demand more details!
Inna: ::sigh:: I can never tell when you're being sarastic
Elmo: Dude, Renata! You know that one guy at school, with brown hair? Yeah, he and that one blonde chick BROKE UP!! I forget their names, but I'm sure YOU know
Keith: Damn our society.

Elmo: It appealed to me *before,* and now it doesn't! Jeez... I mean, uh... breasts rule, yeah
Priscilla: That's why we love you, Elmo.

Keith: I'm confused about why the sky is dark at night, and my delete key is slippery with butter.

Keith: *Proud look* Wait, toastlike?
Renata: Yeah.. see.. "Jake is cute as toast and twice as crunchy", therefore toastlike means cute. It's a good thing :)

Priscilla: I imagined Chelle as just an older version of Megan. ::snickers:: And Keith's forehead scar is *very* Harry Potter. You have my bodily damage seal of approval.

Priscilla: Renata's hair is so skippy that I could just die, right here and now. But I won't.

Renata: So, I gashed my finger pretty badly last night while slicing an apple, but it seems to be healing quite nicely. I wish it weren't, I wanted it to leave a cool scar so I could tell people I got it in a knife fight. With pirates!

Keith: You have AOL? Oh no. I may love you but I'm going to have to kill you out of mercy.

Priscilla: I feel strangely enlightened... oh wait. No I don't.

Ayano: I'm kind of awed, in a frightened, frankenstein-is-no-longer-in-my-control way.
Keith: I want to have Ayano's baby.

Renata: Aw, welcome to my life! Listen to some bitter music-- I recommend Tori, Ani, and Rachael-- and become spiteful towards those you dislike. It's heathier.

Keith: We like to beat dead horses until we are sure they're dead, skin them, light them on fire, burry the ashes, wait for a plant to grow in that spot, hack it into many pieces, and burn that as well. Bad habit.

Kait: ::attaches herself to Megan's leg:: I'm at your service, oh, future listqueen!
Priscilla: ::clears throat loudly and taps foot angrily:: AHEM! (future list queen before Megan was even BORN!)
Renata: Actually, Megan's older than you... but.. it's ok because I'M NOT DEAD YET!
Priscilla: ::blinks:: I was secondary list queen as a fetus.

Keith: Apple is so good. I hoarded them, and ate them all at once, and I lost consciousness.

Laura: *blinks* Keith...somestimes I wonder about you. So where do oyu get this stuff?
Keith: A twisted imagination, a not-so-well used confidence, boredom, and the passion to make people rise one eyebrow, look at me like I just told them I was George Washington, and say "Huh?".
Priscilla: I actually raised *both* eyebrows. Be honored.
Keith: My life is worth something!

Renata: Hee, I invented a month.. Juny... (I meant July, obviously) Like Smarch and Octember!

Priscilla: ::whimpers:: Hitchhiker slash? ::is scared:: That's like... Invader Zim slash.
[LATER]
Priscilla: ::whimpers more:: Who the heck would they slash? Ford/Arthur? Zaphod/Marvin? Trillian/Eccentrica Galumbitus? Hitchhiker's Guide is just... unslashable. It worries me.

Keith: Do you think I'll have trouble finding a wife if after death I want to have my favorite earthly possessions, my unconscious wife, and my lifeless body put on a Viking ship and sent out to sea, and then lit on fire?

Tiff: Ew, do you know how disgusting drowning in cold blood would be? And when they pulled you out, you'd be covered in hemoglobin.

Renata: Alison is damn skippy. *nods*
Laura: ok. *adds one and one together* now. All these newbies! Where did she come from?
Renata: Well, you see, when a man and a woman love each other very much...

Renata: Hey... where the hell did my Peppermint peppermint go? I was saving it because it was so cool...and it was sitting RIGHT HERE next to Slippery Soap from Blues Clues and now it's GONE!! Well, color me bitter...

Renata: I'll ride YOUR ferris wheel! .... that sounds really dirty, doesn't it?

Chelle: I dont want the title unless it comes with a tiara...*stomps*

Elmo: Look here, Mr. Anime Pants...

Meanwhile, today is the eleventy-first birthday of Professor Tolkien. Join fans all over the world in a toast.

Is anyone happy that today is 01-02-03? Because I am. I'm too obsessed with cool dates. Alas. Holy cow, I remember when it was 1991, and all my fellow 6-year-olds were so excited about the year being a palindrome. Good gravy. I'm stuck in traffic on Memory Lane.

The No-Longer-Very-Secret Diary of Priscilla Spencer, April 10, 1997:

I'm so mad at Alex Yancey because she stole my Mad-Libs. I'm also mad at Mrs. Roe because of the way she teaches us. I took all the "Yuk!" faces off a page on the net and titled them, "Looking forward to Mrs. Roe's class." I think I will do one of Alex but soon she will start to have guilt trips. I will let her, "Writhe in the empty pit of guilt." by herself.

I was a vindictive little wretch, wasn't I? Ah, the little gems you find cleaning your desk...

And Alex Yancey never did give me back my Mad Libs, the meanie.

I dreamed that my school was going to offer a course in the works of JRR Tolkien, but it wouldn't fit into my schedule. As soon as I found out that it wouldn't fit, they changed the course description and made it Tolkien and Pratchett. I wasn't very happy, to say the least. I tried to persuade Dr. Moreland and Mrs. Elieff to switch periods -- Dr. Moreland was going to teach it A-block, when Mrs. Elieff was teaching a "Civility and Propriety" class. Dr. Moreland was also teaching a Civility and Propriety class in her B-block. If Mrs. Elieff took the Tolkien class (B-block, where my English slot was) and Dr. Moreland scheduled double C&P, A and B periods, I could take the course. But alas. Instead, I followed Dr. Moreland around, letting her photocopy bits of my copy of "Feet of Clay" and "Nightwatch" (which I had in paperback). Then I woke up.
