The Cult of Lincoln

Friday, November 30, 2001

Oh my God... I just found out. George Harrison died. Around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Cancer. Suddenly the history test I'm about to fail next period doesn't seem nearly as important... Cult of Lincoln will maintain a day of silence in his honor.

Interesting dream. I got to meet Monica, and we got to drive all around this weird foreign country is her awesome fold-up car. Like a go-cart, but a whole lot cooler. For some reason, we kept running into (not literally) Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, two of the witches from Discworld. Then, in another dream, I was in this souped-up trailer, where I was making a recording of "Robin Hood, Men in Tights", which was on TV. Then, Dr. Tucker (my friend Julia's mom) came up to me and asked if I wanted to work with her on this experiment involving artificial guano, made from cobra meat. Then I woke up.

At times, the Government seriously bothers me. Today, my dad and I embarked on an adventure to renew my driver's license. The DPS, of course, is located in the most inconvenient, remote location possible, much to our annoyance. I filled out the necessary form and waited until they called me up to the desk, where I was then given a brief eye exam, which in my opinion was slightly unfair, as the left eye screen had a huge glare. Then the lady informed me that she couldn't renew my license because I never had one to start out with. Evidently, her predecessor had made a typo, because my "license" was restricted to being simply a driver's permit with photo-ID. For those that don't know the difference, a driver's permit is intended for student drivers, restricting them to driving with an adult in the passenger seat. This caused my dad and me to flail a great deal, as she claimed that I hadn't finished Driver's Ed, which was absolutely ridiculous. This meant that I am now guilty of driving without a licence for at least a dozen counts. Even though I had no way of knowing, that sort of thing really bothers me.

Because the DPS closed at 5, we didn't have time to go to All Star, the driving school, to get a copy of the paperwork necessary to issue me a license. This is a definite problem. I needed to have a car for the weekend, as both my parents are leaving town and I don't want to have to live on pizza and Chinese food. Plus, I have rehearsal on Friday and every day next week, so God knows when I would finally be able to get the bloody thing renewed. Desperate, my dad called All Star, to see if they had a copy of the paperwork. The guy said that he'd call my dad back in a few minutes. After 5 o'clock passed, we went to my dad's office, where the All Star guy finally called my dad. He couldn't find a copy. In fact, he couldn't find a record that I'd even attended All Star. After a great deal of annoyance, he told my dad that he'd check again in different years to see if he could find my file. A few minutes later, he called to tell my dad that he had found the form, but that additional copies were $10. With no other solution, my dad agreed.

He dropped me off at home and went off to pick up the form from All Star, which didn't close until 6:30, thankfully. I left my li-- *permit* with my dad, in case All Star decided to be annoying. Twenty minutes later, my dad called me to say that he couldn't find my permit, which I had put on top of a stack of envelopes next to the driver's seat. I told him that he was probably overlooking it somehow, like I always do whenever I try too hard to find something. However, when he returned, neither of us could find the permit, despite 15 minutes of exhaustive searching, flashlights included. This is especially disheartening, as he has already mailed the stack of envelopes where I had put my permit. Just great.

What do we do from here? Now that I have the Form of Doom, I have four options. One is to go transportation-less for the weekend, relying solely on my bicycle to get places. The "nearby" restaurants I love are nearly an hour's walk, or perhaps a 20 minute bike ride. Fortunately, the new SMU Barnes' and Noble is about a 10 minute bike ride. However, I'm sick and it's nearly freezing outside. Frankly, I don't feel like risking it. Having one's face continuously barraged by freezing wintry air is not the best thing for one's immune system. Option Two is to drive around regardless, which in my opinion is better than Option One, but still a really bad idea. I could get in serious trouble if stopped by the police, which would be the Government's perfect ironic justice. Option Three is to convince my aunt to take me out of school during lunch (which is mercifully followed by a free period, as we don't have P.E. on Fridays), and get my license renewed. While this sounds to me like the best option, I would not be in the school's good graces if the Powers That Be found out. Most likely, I would be given a detention, and I could possibly have my Junior priveliges suspended when we finally get them. Option Four is not even worth considering. It entails skipping rehearsal on Friday and going with my aunt to renew my license. Because I skipped Tuesday's rehearsal due to illness, Mr. Blaydes will kill me if I skip again. Plus, he decided yesterday that he wanted me in the opening number, which is particularly annoying, because that has been in rehearsal all week, and I have missed all the choreography lessons. He wanted me to come today, and it was only through a pathetic amount of pleading that I was able to get off in order to get my license. Bah.

So that's my story. Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Anyone that read to the end gets cookie points. Anyone that didn't should be glad, because that means they actually have a life. Good for them. So meh.

::laughs:: Evidently, I wasn't the only one to attempt a musical adaptation of "Men at Arms". Join me in laughing my head off at "Walt Disney Presents: Discworld". Found in issue 26 of Discworld Monthly, and continued in 27 and 30.

A snippet:
Angua: he's such a nice boy
but I have to be coy
because he'll never understand
when he reaches for my hand
and finds that it's a... paw!

it ain't easy being me,
it ain't easy having PLT,
it ain't easy when the moon's in your eye,
and you're there with your guy
and you rip out his throat with one bite
that's not polite
Highly amusing. Which reminds me of another recent dream: a "Forbidden Broadway" spoof of Men At Arms, which featured people dressed up as me and Terry Pratchett, singing about how if I ever tried to write another Discworld musical, they'd sue the pants off me. All to the tune of "Too Much to Lose", the song that I posted the first verse of a few weeks ago, only to have two people comment (but I'm not bitter, no!). Particularly badly written line was "If she tries to write another one, I know I've got to refuse. The Discworld and musicals: they've both got too much too lose." ::sigh:: All I want for Christmas is a life...

Filched from Rebecca M.

Which Evil Criminal are You? Imelda Marcos

You're famous for your shoes (enough that you eventually opened an entire museum of them), and sometimes lauded as a celebrity. But underneath, you're still the woman who spent billions of dollars of money stolen from the Filipino population; theft that lead to extreme poverty.

Your husband, Ferdinand Marco, stole well over $5 billion, and plunged the entire country into heavier and heavier debt. Your response? Spend it. Spend it all.

Even when you claim to have reformed, sources estimate that you illegally hold $12 billion worth of shares. I guess luxury's just your style.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys think of the cloning issue? Personally, I don't really have an objection to it. I see nothing wrong with therapeudic cloning, and as for reproductive cloning, I don't see anything wrong with creating life from one person's genetic material as opposed to two. Sure, it's still risky and dangerous at this point, but new technology is always risky and dangerous when it's first introduced. That's why I think scientists should be allowed to do more research. Out of curiosity, what exactly do people find morally wrong with cloning? I can understand the stem cell debate, but I can't understand this. They're just cloning human cells, in hopes that they can develop new techniques for treatment of patients with Parkinsons, diabetes, and spinal cord injuries, to name a few.

Also, I find it amusingly ironic that some people are urging a ban on human cloning in the United States. Don't they realize that they'd have more control over cloning if they allowed research in the U.S.? After all, if a scientist wants to study cloning, he or she could just study abroad. No one is keeping them in the U.S.; cloning research would still go on.

As always, if I am hopelessly deluded and making a fool of myself for my lack of vision and devotion to misinformation, I encourage you to correct me. If I'm completely wrong, or you want to express a dissenting opinion, I want to hear it. Let those comments fly, baby.

It turns out that I wasn't able to make it through the day. Mrah. Want to know what bothers me? That there's a new version of Quicktime out every five minutes. You have to spend 50 years downloading it, then it installs wrong, and you have to try a billion more times and eventually rip all your hair out in clumps and storm out of the room, unable to see anything. Then the next time you want to watch something new, you have to download a new version, and the whole process repeats again. Death to Quicktime!

Last night was so happy and musical! Weird dream, yo. It took place in this sci-fi world where people were highly biased by their skin color. There were wars fought between those with white and black skin (literally white and black. Not peach and dark brown!). There were documentaries made, glorifying the whites, and ridiculing the blacks as evil. Now, another war was brewing. I was on the side of the whites, which at this point just had incredibly pale skin. The blacks had more dark grey skin. However, I had the same color skin that I have now, just ordinary caucasian. I was ridiculed by those around me. I found friendship in a girl whose situation was even more dire than mine. Her skin had a purple hue.

The action began in a military training center not unlike the one in "Ender's Game". A bunch of typical teenagers, learning to become soldiers. Most didn't really care, and made efforts to get out of the simulation practice. To get to the simulation, we had to ride on this hellish mockery of a monorail. We held on to these two vertical bars, but we had nothing to stand or sit on. And it went FAST. And there were these turns that would nearly throw you off due to the angular momentum. Once you started to slip, you had to hope that you would be really lucky.

Briefly, I was in a simulation group with James, Sirius, and Peter. I was Remus. We had gotten out of last week's simulation using a hologram of our ship. Unfortunately, we weren't able to control it very well, and those in charge became suspicious. Thus week, we planned to make them think that our ship was empty, so that they would return it to the hold. We were successful, until the very last bit, where Sirius (who was actually more like Riff, from Sluggy Freelance at this point) cheered when the ship reached the hold. From the viewscreens of the people in charge, he was barely seen, albeit briefly. One woman, who was notorious among the students for her strictness, and looked a great deal like one of the mission moderators at Advanced Space Academy, went off to find us. We had hidden in a bus, rejoicing at our good fortune. Surprisingly, she didn't get mad at us. She lauded our cunning, expressing sentiments that she wished more students were as clever as we were. We expected her to snap at any moment, but she didn't.

We returned to the dorms later, were I was myself again. We all wore these white blouses and purple skirts. However, I never received a blouse, so I had to walk around, Lisa Simpson-style, with a really long skirt acting like a strapless dress. I received a lot of grief over this, and eventually I snapped, searching all my hall-mates' closets for extra shirts. Because no one really liked me except the purple-skinned girl, no one would give me a blouse. At that point, one of the boys' groups got back from the simulation session, where a boy who looked like a messy-haired Chris Rankin told us how he had brilliantly gotten out of the simulation. All the girls on my floor and the guys who were visiting thought that this guy's scheme was fantastic. Unfortunately, it was unrepeatable.

Later down the line, we had been through our first battle. We emerged virtually unscathed, and we had returned to the battle school. The next day, however, I noticed that people's faces had changed. Everyone had a few pieces of glitter on their faces. Those that had killed or injured the most had the most glitter. The purple girl and I barely had any. I interpreted it as "loss of innocence" symbolism, or slowly losing what we interpreted as "good" and turning into "evil". The glitter wouldn't come off, no matter how hard one tried. After a while, the amount of glitter started reflecting (not literally) what they were like as a person. If they were cruel, they had lots of glitter. If they were kind, they had almost nothing.

Later on, I saw that Casey Potter was with us at the battle school. Much to my chagrin, our floor decided to put on a production of "Ten Little Indians". Because Casey knew it would annoy me, I was to play Emily again. Once it was cast, we spent several hours arguing over whether the line was "pukka mahib" or "pukka sahib". Aaargh. Then I woke up.

Why can't I have dreams like this *before* the last week of NaNoWriMo?

True, true. Yet another online quiz. Take it yourself!

Your view on yourself

Other people find you very interesting, but you are really hiding your true self. Your friends love you because you are a good listener; they'll probably still love you if you learn to be yourself with them.

The type of girl/boyfriend you are looking for.

You are not looking merely for a girl/boyfriend - you are looking for your life partner. Perhaps you should be more open-minded about who you spend time with. The person you are looking for might hide their charm under their exterior.

Your readiness to commit to a relationship.

You are ready to commit as soon as you meet the right person. And you believe you will pretty much know as soon as you might that person.

The seriousness of your love.

Your have very sensible tactics when approaching the opposite sex. In many ways people find your straightforwardness attractive, so you will find yourself with plenty of dates.

Your views on education

Education is less important than the real world out there, away from the classroom. Deep inside you want to start working, earning money and living on your own.

The right job for you.

You have plenty of dream jobs but have little chance of doing any of them if you don't focus on something in particular. You need to choose something and go for it to be happy and achieve success.

How do you view success?

You are confident that you will be successful in your chosen career and nothing will stop you from trying.

What are you most afraid of?

You are afraid of things that you cannot control. Sometimes you show your anger to cover up how you feel.

Who is your true self?

You are mature, reasonable, honest and give good advice. People ask for your comments on all sorts of different issues. Sometimes you might find yourself in a dilemma when trapped with a problem, which your heart, rather than your head, needs to solve.

Odd dreams. First, my mom and I were driving around during a huge rainstorm. There was a huge probability that the car would get struck by lightning, so I was trying to remember everything they told you in school regarding this situation. I considered putting a blanket on top of the car, but then I remembered that it was an electric blanket, and it would probably increase our likeliness of being hit. During the storm, the winds were so powerful that cars kept being pulled back into this huge cloudmass. My mom and I drove away as fast as possible. She controlled the pedals and I controlled the wheel from the passenger seat, and she berated me for driving too fast. Silly girl.

Then, I was at Chili's, rereading "The Fifth Elephant", which was illustrated like "The Last Hero". Sannali's fabulous birthday card was among all the lovely Kidby illustrations. I was shocked, because it mentioned in the text that Carrot was 18 at that point, while I had previously thought that the City Watch books were roughly a year apart, timeline-wise.

In the next dream, I was at this math competition. Previously, I had been in the same contest, and I had won. Of course, all my competitors were at least two years below me. This time, all my rivals were from my grade in school. To make matters worse, they randomly decided that I shouldn't be allowed use of a calculator. Then I saw two girls cheating and tried to bring them to the proctor's attention, but the proctor became irritated with me and told me to be quiet. I think this dream pretty much mimics the Harry Potter Trivia Competition from a few weeks ago. I advanced from the low ranks, and finally I was set against equals. Then they told me I couldn't use my knowledge of the British editions, and they ignored my protests when I claimed that their answer sheet was wrong, threatening to kick me out of the event.

La la la. I figured one or two of you might be remotely curious as to what was in the Mystery Sacks of Doom. The cd was Harry Potter, which was joyous, as I had been planning on getting it soon. The book was vocal selections from RENT, which is always ultra-groovy. The bag held a small silver heart keychain, for whenever I get my car. Gah, I have to renew my license. As today was my 17th birthday, it expired today. No driving for me for the next few days. Meh. So all is glorious in la vida Priscilla, and I'm going to sleep. Night-night!

Quotes time! Keep in mind that a few of these were slightly paraphrased, because conversations (especially at Chili's) tend to go unwritten. Most of the punch lines remain the same, though. It's all good.

Every good show has to have a tango. Rent, Little Shop of Horrors, Moulin Rouge... It's like an unwritten law. --Me, explaining to my mother the title song for "Men at Arms"

Cherise: I never watched the show again, ever since I saw a ship give birth.
Me: What?!? Ever since you saw Swift give birth?
Cherise: No! A ship!
Me: Oh! ::laughs::
Cherise: I'm never eating at Chili's again...
--Referring to "Farscape"

Republicans are nice peo-- ::pause:: Republicans! --Marcelina

Marcelina: How is this pasta Cajun?
Me: It isn't. I told them to take all the Cajun-ness out.
Cherise: It's the Anglo-Saxon Chicken Pasta.

Chungy: I read in an article about this student who wasn't able to get housing in college, so he lived in the library.
Me: What, curled up among the grimoires?
Chungy: It's true. My brother knows him. He slept on the library couches, used the nearby bathrooms to brush his teeth, and showered in his friends' dorms. He's actually gotten to be pretty popular there.
Me: Gives whole new meaning to the phrase "cuddle up with a good book".
--This is true.

Chungy: Why is Swift acting so strangely?
Christine: He probably can't remember which nickname he told you.

Of course, most of the day I've been home alone. My mom and sister have been out together, and the few times my dad has been by, they haven't been here. Am I ever going to open them? Maybe in a week.

Of course, I still get my guessing games. One is quite obviously a CD. I have no way of guessing which one. I'm taking a stab in the dark and guessing "Magical Mystery Tour", as I had complained to my sister a great deal yesterday because she had taken my copy with her to California. Number Two is a tall, thin, soft-back book. My mind suggested "The Pratchett Portfolio", but I'm not sure if it's available in the U.S., and I doubt my dad would have heard of it. Plus, it's too thick to be "The Pratchett Portfolio". Meh. Maybe it's a "how to draw" book. That sounds like something my dad would do. Number Three is hidden by tissue paper in a very lightweight, small, pink sack. No guesses ventured.

I want to find out what they are! Mrah! ::wrinkles nose and goes downstairs for chocolate milk::

I went scan-happy. Pictures. Joy!

Yes, that *is* Adam Pascal -- last year in New York
Ann and the sheep -- two summers ago at Camp Hell. This was my wall decoration.
A very large sheep -- part of a prank at Camp Hell.
Homecoming 99 -- this dress bothers me.
CosPlay Exploits -- a jedi at The Camp of Joy two summers ago. For a lip sync contest. I chose "The Saga Begins". The belt is made out of duct tape.
Leia hair -- at Camp of Joy two summers ago. Shauna gave me the Leia hairstyle from the beginning of TESB for a Dance of Doom.
Old shoes -- I love these shoes. They're older than I am. Too bad my parents have forbidden me from wearing them.
Sirius and Me -- at the Rose Center in New York. I hate cameras. See my pretty dragon on my binder and my groovy Quatrix t-shirt.
Teatime -- I hated this assignment. Self-Portraits. Bleugh.

Use whatever you want, Tanja. But not the Sirius one. Or the picture of Ann with the sheep, because it is obviously not me.

I just reorganized my cd collection. Ah, it gives such a feeling of satisfaction. Now all Beatles and Broadway and A Cappella and Weird Al are properly arranged. Muaha.

I think I've settled on a design for tnm.n. It's very simple and quick to load, with plenty of breathing room, versatility, and update potential. Let's just see if I still like it tomorrow...

Ahh, joy. I got a couple new Beatles CDs for my birthday (Let it Be and Live at the BBC), and Live at the BBC includes a track with Paul singing "Till there was you" from The Music Man. ::pokes Sannali and sighs happily:: And they're all cute and amusing. ::hugs the Beatles::

Oh, and Monica got a blog. The title amuses me.

I just saw Harry Potter again. Mrah. It should amuse me, but I've been in a bit of a funk today. Blah. Go look at me in age makeup: 001, 002

The flash washed out my cheek makeup, so you can't really see it except in the bottom one, where it looks stupid. But oh well. It looked awesome on stage. And of course, it looks best when I'm frowning, but I'm smiling in all these images. So meh. And my hair is messed up. It shouldn't be. That's my aunt and uncle, in case you cared. ::grumbles a bit and toddles off to CG Sannali's stuff::

I had a seriously weird dream last night. First, I dreamed that I was in this parody-writing group class thingy, and I had to write a parody of a RENT song in French. For inspiration, the teachers provided us with a series of highly amusing canned food labels. Then, I was suddenly at Sail Caribbean again. Except the wind was so strong that the ship had keeled over to about a 45 degree angle, and I was clinging to the lines on the side of the ship (I forgot what they were called. Meh. You know, those support line things!) Then we dragged the boat aground and started paining graffitti on the hull and keel. Search me why.

Other points of interest:

1. On Sunday, I got to see Cirque du Soleil. Dralion. It was absolutely magnificent. My hands started to hurt from clapping so much. Like Ann, I loved the naked guy with balls, but I think my favourite had to be the girls in green who see-saw catapulted themselves into really tall formations and stuff. It was amazing. A minor point -- I got to see Bern there! Bern, if you either have forgotten or if you are new to my blog, is one of the most amusing people in the universe. He played Bud Frump in Jesuit's production of "How to Succeed" last year. We said "hi" and smalltalked and it was all good. Yay!

2. Yesterday, my friends threw me a mini-surprise party for my birthday (Friday! Yay!). Of course, talking to Chungy during the day, it became obvious. The poor girl just can't lie to save her life. ::hugs Chungy:: We went to Chili's, where we immediately ran into Swift, one of the infamous Chili's waiters. Also traipsing about the place was Brian, who has become equally infamous in the minds of the JETS. I just realized that I never actually got to post about our adventures with Brian and Chili's and "The Mummy Returns" because that was the day Douglas Adams died. Maybe I'll fill you all in on the story later. Anyway, Swift was obviously shocked when everyone sang the birthday song for me and announced that I was turning 17. He had tried to hit on me when we first met him, so he must have thought I was older. I found this particularly entertaining. Then we all went to the theatre to try to find a movie we all agreed on. We weren't able to find one, as Margaret wouldn't see Harry Potter, Monsters Inc., or Amelie. Instead, we all went to my house, where we watched Robin Hood: Men in Tights. As the movie progressed, people started leaving for whatever they had to do, and eventually it was just me and Chungy. We called Elizabeth and she came over, and we ordered in Chinese food and watched "Shrek". Let it be known that the Karaoke Swamp Dance is absolutely hilarious! After that, Elizabeth left, and it was just me and Chungy. We talked for about two hours, then she had to go home, as well. Then I went to sleep.

3. I put up the Amelie mini-poster they gave me at the Inwood. It's all happy.

4. I knit another band on the scarf. It's now about 3 1/2 feet. Just one more foot to go!

5. Loh informs me that a scarf sold on eBay for over $100, just because it looked like the one Harry Potter wore. I've decided to start making and selling scarves in my free time to rake in some extra money. Muaha!

6. I need to re-post the "Who's Who" thing. Meh.

Today, my mental image of Carrot experienced a rather sudden, jarring shift. I was rereading "Guards! Guards!", and it says that he's nearly 16. ::stares:: No way I'm older than he is...
