Caelyn informs me that sprachtenntnisse means "language knowledge". Hell.

Und die Sprachkenntnisse der Verfasserin lassen manchmal ein wenig zu wünschen übrig: (Latein!). = And the language knowledge of the author leaves a little something to be desired. (Latin!)

Excuse me for having parents that made me take French, despite my pleas to take Latin instead. There's only so far you can go with an online Latin language dictionary, buckoes. ::wrinkles nose, determined not to let this bother her::

Time to recreate more entries that were eaten by my evil ISP of doom! This one is from last night, but I'm rewriting it from today's viewpoint, as that seems a bit more logical in my opinion.

Yesterday, my dad bought a record player for the family. We *do* have one already, but it's nasty and semi-broken and old and I wouldn't trust it with "The Olsen Twins: Live in Concert", much less any of the superfroody priceless old albums my parents have. My dad called me down that evening to listen to a Whiffenpoofs (an all-male a cappella group at Yale) recording from the 60's. They were fabulous, and I was completely enchanted with the record player. I was bitten by the nostalgia fairy, I suppose. Anyway, after listening to several songs, I started leafing through my parents' record colection, which is absolutely huge. I only went through one stack, but what I found made my entire weekend. Amid the bunch of Bob Dylan albums, Rugby songs, and scores of folk artists and soundtracks I had never heard of, I struck gold. First, I found a 33 1/3 record of Abbey Road, which is probably my favourite album of all time. Next, I found the Beatles 1964-1966 Anthology, which has a bunch of songs I absolutely love. But nothing could prepare me for what I found next. An unopened copy of The Beatles 1967-1970 Anthology. Mint condition. Original packaging. I don't even want to think about how much that baby is worth to a collector! Evidently, my mom had bought it when it came out, knowing that it would probably become a collector's item. Ye gods. I can't wait to break the news to Marcelina and the rest of my Beatles-worshipping friends! ::cackles with glee and prances happily about:: JOY!

I also have to say that I absolutely love listening to records now. They just seem to have some special quality or aura about them. Also, they're a bit clearer, as I was able to understand some of the lyrics on Abbey Road that I wasn't able to hear properly on CD. Also, the "ending" to "She's So Heavy" makes a whole lot more sense now, as the end of that song is at the end of that side of the record. When it just cuts off, and immediately goes into "Here Comes the Sun" on CD, it seems a bit strange.

I can't wait to look through the rest of my parents' albums! I only looked through about a fifth of them, so I'm sure I'll come across even more treasures along the way! ::skips about merrily:: Feel free to comment in my blog about how insanely jealous you are about this whole thing. Go ahead, make my day. XD

Does anyone know what the German word "sprachkenntnisse" means? I have to know if I'm being complimented or insulted.

Edit: after playing with Babelfish, I have broken it down into sprach (spoke) + kenn (know) + tnisse (?). Can anyone help me from there?

I've been working on potential JETS logos for this year. Our robot, following our tradition of naming after powerful females from Greek mythology, is named Artemis. Previous years include Athena and Hippolyta, plus a catapult named Sullis. Which one do you prefer? Facing inward or facing outward?

Amusing quotes of the week:

This is a "round peg to square hole" conversion adapter. --Mr. Taylor, Multimedia Engineering

It's the shiny blue plastic moose call... of Physics! --Mr. Lohstreter, Multimedia Engineering

For all those mooses that like A's two octaves below middle C, this will get them coming! --Mr. Taylor, Multimedia Engineering

Mr. Taylor: Something's got to give. It's either you or the car.
Me: The other car!
--Referring to the physics of car collisions in Math Phys class

The first thing I do when I get to Y.O. [Ranch] is say "Let me see your E-shaped fence". --Mr. Dubsky, referring to a calculus problem featuring an E-shaped fence, which amused us greatly

Stolen from Ann. You wanna make something of it?

1. What was the very first fandom you got involved in: Animorphs

2. What is the most recent fandom to catch your interest: Discworld, though I remain loyal to Harry Potter

3. Fandom you've stayed loyal to the longest: Animorphs, I suppose

4. Fandom(s) you're most passionate about: Harry Potter (fan art, specifically)

5. Fandom(s) you wish you could get into, but can't: ::shrugs:: I wanted to get into the X-Files fandom, but never really made a name for myself. Of course, now that X-Files has gone down the drain, there does that idea.

6. Fandoms you're curious about, but never had the chance to get into: HP fanfic, Red Dwarf, Discworld (considering. I haven't really made steps)

7. Fandom that's been the most fun to be involved in: HP fanart and WOFS in general. I love my WOFSers.

8. Fandom that's been the least fun to be involved in: X-Files, I suppose? Dunno. Noromos are a definite minority.

9. Fandom you're ashamed to admit you were involved in: Animorphs

10. Are you looking for a new fandom, or actively avoiding getting sucked into something new? I'm probably going to end up in the Discworld fandom eventually, but I figure that with fandoms it's best to let nature take its course. I don't usually do anything out of the ordinary to switch fandoms. It just... happens.

Though exhausting, today was a great day. As I've probably mentioned already, I'm in a Yoga class for P.E., and today we talked about Yom Kippur and forgiveness. I happen to share the class with Rachel B, who was my best friend all through middle school. However, in 8th grade, there was a big nasty breakup, leaving us both incredibly depressed, friendless, and hurt. Last year, we patched up and we've gotten to be friends again. Today, all during Ms. Childers' talk, we mouthed "I'm sorry" and other such phrases across the room. When she dismissed the class, we got up and hugged for nearly an entire minute. Even though I was no longer bearing a grudge against Rachel, it still felt like a huge weight was lifted off my chest. I think Yom Kippur is my new favourite holiday. Why don't more religions have a special week for forgiveness?

Another great thing that happened today was my weekly meeting with Mr. Dubsky. Mr. Dubsky is my Applied Calculus teacher and an absolute genius. He easily one of my favourite teachers at the school. Anyway, today he decided to talk to me and Chungy about Chaos theory. It was fascinating! We did all these groovy things on our calculators and read from a book on Chaos by James Gleick. He told us about a man (whose name I can't recall at the moment) studying the possible links of chaos theory to Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Mr. Dubsky and the man who remains unnamed are currently doing research on the subject, and Dubsky wants Chungy and me to join him! ::giddy smile:: This is going to be fabulous!

What a happy day! Now I'm ready to go to sleep.

No WAY! This is like a dream come true! YAAAAAAAYYY! I was just pondering about this the other day. They're making a movie out of "Good Omens", the work of genius by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. And it's being directed by former Python Terry Gilliam! ::dances:: I just hope it makes the translation well. Like Douglas Adams and Dave Barry, a whole lot of the humor is in the commentary, as opposed to the actual action. I'm fairly confident that Gilliam can pull it off, though. ::nods:: Joy, joy, joy, joy...

I love the knowledge that I can work in natural media now. It gives me so much more confidence! This evening, I was playing with a ruler I got at the BEST kickoff (they like to give us random Raytheon stuff. It's really cool.), and I realized that that I could take it apart and change out the little piece of paper advertizing Raytheon. I pulled the cover off and saw that the Raytheon ad was just two pieces of 12x1.5" paper, with printing on one side and a white back. I flipped the papers around and smiled at the potential niftiness that awaited me. Pencil and crayon, definitely. Now I just need to figure out how to print onto the paper slip things that came in the ruler, as whenever I try to use crayon on pencil, it gets messy and smeary and annoying. (I printed a duplicate when I went to color my Men at Arms picture.) I suppose I could ink my sketch, but I really don't like strong outlines and frankly, I'm not very good at inking. I suppose I'll draw something, scan it in, and print it in two pieces, then glue the whole thing together. Or maybe I could make a photocopy and save myself the trouble. I'll have to see how well Xeroxes hold up under crayon.

If this is a success, I'll have to ask the other JETS if they kept their rulers. I don't see why they wouldn't. There were five of us, so that makes ten joyous pieces of art! Yay! Now I just need to figure out what to draw!

The Dakota (by Christine Lavin)

This song was written about John Lennon's death, but it's been stuck in my mind a lot recently, especially when I think about Tuesday's disaster. I reccomend downloading it if you can find it anywhere, or better yet, buying a copy of "What Was I Thinking", which has a lot of her songs that I really love. Anyway, I wanted to post the lyrics, so here they are.

It was a Monday morning, I was coming in from a long trip on the road
I flagged a cab down near the East Side Terminal; I said "Please take me home".
We drove up along Third Avenue and crossed through Central Park.
When we came out at 72nd street, I felt a chill in my heart.

Every time I see the Dakota, I think about that night.
Shots ringing out, the angry shouts, a man losing his life.
Well it's something we shouldn't dwell upon but it's something we shouldn't ignore.
Too many good men have been cut down. Let's pray there won't be any more.

Rush hour traffic was bottled up. We slowly inched by.
I didn't want to look, but I couldn't help staring at the scene of the crime.
There was an old man sweeping last night's dirt out of a darkened vestibule
And a uniformed guard in a gold-trimmed cap watching the world pass into view

But very time I see the Dakota, I think about that night.
Shots ringing out, the angry shouts, a man losing his life.
Well it's something we shouldn't dwell upon but it's something we shouldn't ignore.
Too many good men have been cut down. Let's pray there won't be any more.

I don't believe in coincidence, so why then on the radio
did an old familiar voice echo back from not so long ago
He said: "Imagine all the people living life in peace"
Oh, that's hard to do when you're on his bloodstained street

I wish I had the answer to the simple question "why?".
I wish this taxi would go faster, oh I wish the driver would try
To leave this street and leave this old building far behind.
I wish if Barbara Walters wants to interview murderers she changes her mind.

But every time I see the Dakota, I still think about that night.
Shots ringing out, the angry shouts, a man losing his life.
Well it's something we shouldn't dwell upon but it's something we shouldn't ignore.
Too many good men have been cut down. Let's pray there won't be any more.

Imagine all the people living life in peace.

We had to write love letters to ourselves for Yoga class, which is my P.E. for this quarter. Fun stuff. Here's my lovely letter.
Dearest Priscilla, how I love you. You are truly the woman for me. You are more beautiful than Hillary Clinton. Your hair cascades down your shoulders like a herd of wild goats stampeding down Mount Everest. Your eyes are two tubs of blue Jell-O. Your teeth are like white Chicklets. Your lips are the color of strawberry jam on toast. Your nose turns up like the ski jump of love. Your breasts are like two pinheads on a breadboard. Your figure is like a beanpole in the Garden of Eden. Marry me.

Your not so secret admirer
I hope Ms. Childers has a good sense of humor. XD

Fun stuff today! As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the night with my groovy aunt and uncle. In the morning, my aunt made us biscuits, scrambled eggs, and bacon. She makes perfect bacon. Not too crispy, not too fat, not too raw. PERFECT bacon. I worship this bacon. The biscuits were to die for, too. Then my uncle took me to school on his motorcycle (!) for the Junior Car Wash, where I got to hang out with Mack and Chungy and many other cool people and wash cars. JaMes Sloan and Julia Ford were standing on the street, waving posters, filking various songs to try to get people to come to the car wash. My personal favourite was to the tune of "Lady Marmalade":
Getcha getcha getcha car washed
Getcha getcha car washed here
Getcha getcha getcha car washed
Get it washed at Hockaday

Voulez-vous lavez avec moi, ce soir?
Voulez-vous lavez avec moi?
We all laughed.

Anyway, afterwards, we had a JETS meeting. We didn't get a lot done, but we had fun. Loh showed us this really cool chalk line thingie that we all got to play with, Marcelina and Rachel talked about Farscape, a bunch of us made jokes about what was beyond the green glass doors**, and we just had fun in general.

Now I'm going to lunch.

**See if you can figure out why things are behind the green glass doors and why some things aren't! Priscilla, Ann, Sannali, Rebecca, and Kell are behind the green class doors, but Tanja is not. Harry and Ginny are, but Percy, Hermione, and Ron are not. Carrot, Cheery, and Nobby are, but Angua, Vimes, and Rincewind are not. Balloons are, but string is not. See how far that gets you. I'll explain in a later entry.

Men at Arms: the Musical! In crayon. And if it makes any difference, her full name is Delphine Angua von Uberwald. ::nods:: And your coloring is fabulous! Not sure if we'd see all those mountains and trees and grass in Ankh-Morpork, though. XD

For those that care, my CG is nearly done. I just have to decide what on earth to do for a background and if I should keep the colors I chose for Angua's skirt and cape. I borrowed the skirt from Paul Kidby's Angua illustration (which, surprisingly, isn't on the man's website, yet is on this random fansite), which is in black and white. Bah. Sannali's color choices inspire me, though. ::nods:: Happiness and joy!

I love my bookmarks. One is holding a place in "The Last Continent" and the other in "The Fifth Elephant". I'm so obsessed with these bookmarks! I would probably go up to random people on the street and brag about their niftyness if I actually got out more often. I of course showed them to all my friends at the JETS sleepover/Christine's B-day/Nancy-is-home-for-the-weekend party, and Nancy really wants one. If Kell continues the bookmarks business, I think I'll get her an Outlaw Star one for part of a Christmas present, as I assume Kell is morally opposed to drawing anything for Dragonball Z, Nancy's favourite anime. ::visible shudder:: Maybe Evangelion or Gundam Wing or summat. Well, Chungy finished "Guards! Guards!" today and she absolutely loved it. Now she's lending it to Mackenzie. Happiness! Joy! I'm bringing "Men at Arms" for her tomorrow. ::nods::

I got the role of Emily! Go me! ::does a little dance:: The other Emily is Casey Potter, who played a secretary in "How to Succeed". She's so groovy. Yay!

Go worship Alicey. She never fails to amuse the heck out of me with her WOFS art challenges. Which reminds me -- I was supposed to CG one of her images. Gah, I really have to start writing this stuff down...

Kell, have the bookmarks been sent out yet? I'm still flailing about with an empty mailbox, which makes me sad, because next week my parents are going to Italy to celebrate my mom's 50th birthday (ahem-- 25th birthday) and we're getting out mail held at the post office. Now it'll be another week before I get my happy Percy bookmark! ::flails a bit, then sits down and sulks::

The song "Hand in Hand" by the Rounder Girls is just the song I needed to hear regarding the tragedy Tuesday morning. Download it from me on KaZaA. I'll put it up in a few minutes.

We had callbacks for "Ten Little Indians" today. The only role Mrs. Felice had me read was Emily, the psycho Christian fundie nun person. Originally I was a bit disappointed, as I wanted the role of Vera, the only girl who makes it through the play alive and gets to have fun mental breakdowns and such. However, while I was reading through the script with various other actors, I began to realize what an awesome role Emily could be. In one scene, I got to blow up at a girl and start reading passages from the Bible about sinners and hell and such. I had so much fun with it! By the end, I was spouting scripture with such fury that I was shaking. When I finished, Mrs. Felice shouted "Amen, sister!". I started laughing when we broke character. The entire experience was incredibly therapeudic. I think I have a great chance at landing the role, as there were only three or four girls called back for Emily, and the show's females are double-cast. Funfun! Cross your fingers, kiddies.

Well, yesterday's day of blog silence is over. We return to your regular scheduled programming.

Yesterday, I wanted to comment about the Iraquis and the Palestinians and the Egyptians celebrating in the streets, but it makes me sick to my stomach to even think about it. If you want to read about it, I'm sure that some internet news sources will have more than enough information for you. I don't know how much more of these news reports I can take. On CNN last night, they kept talking about war. The scariest part was when the leader of some conservative organization (sorry, I don't remember his name) gave a speech about how he wanted the country to go to war. He thought it was inevitable. That just scares me to death. However, instead of focusing all my thoughts on this and depressing my blog readers any further, I wanted to share an article that my friend Nancy sent to me. It made me angry, but it also made me feel a bit more optimistic. Hopefully it will have the same effect on you.
America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

So far I've managed to restore WIAN, my blog, and the sketchblog. Next up is the Quotes section. I'll try for the /art/ subdomain after, but it was really just a bunch of random stuff. Gah, I'm such a moron.

CNN.com is saying that there's still one missing flight. No one can find it. And it turns out that it was a plane that destroyed part of the Pentagon, not just a bomb. A plane with bombs. And Dallas may be a target, for all we know. When will the nightmare stop?

I don't want to have to go to war! America is supposed to be a perfect country! I was supposed to have a perfect childhood and adolescence! You can't expect me to live through a war! Please don't let us go to war. I keep expecting to wake up any moment; as if this were some awful nightmare or some terrible joke in incredibly bad taste. My mind keeps comparing to Orson Welles' rendition of "War of the Worlds"; I can't seem to accept that this is really real. My head hurts whenever I try to wrap my brain around the gravity of what's happening here.

Dr. Magee, the headmistress, is insisting on maintaining a normal schedule, acting as though nothing has happened. It drives me nuts that we're still having to go to our normal classes. It's like when Mrs. Brennan died last year, only thousands of times worse. I can't even begin to comprehend what it's like for the people of Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, and New York.

I'm scared out of my mind. We watched CBS all through Engineering class, and they keep mentioning Dallas. I don't know if I've ever been so scared. Bombs at the Pentagon and the White House; plane crashes in the World Trade Center, outside Pittsburgh, and near Camp Davis. I just want to go home! Or better yet, to Mackenzie's farm, which is well outside of Dallas. I'm so scared for all my friends in New York -- Tara, Mrs. Marcus, Jamie, Walter, and Christolphe, among countless others I met at MTC and Cambridge. I really need a stuffed animal just about now.
